4000 children die every day from diarrhoea caused by unclean water and poor sanitation.

Did your government make commitments at the SWA High Level Meeting in April?

On 20 April 2012, world leaders from over 50 countries came together and made commitments to action to end the water and sanitation crisis. Now, it's time to make sure that they keep to these commitments!

Did your decision maker attend the SWA High Level Meeting? What commitments for action did they make?

An unprecedented number of Ministers of Finance, Development and Water from 40 countries, along with development banks and civil society, came together in April to make commitments to accelerate efforts to bring clean water and safe sanitation to millions.

Find out if a representative from your country was there and find out what commitments they made here!

So, what now?

End Water Poverty members are starting to look at the commitments that their governments have made. Are these new commitments or has the government repeated ones made previously? Are these commitments monitorable by civil society?

We're keen to hear from you to find out what you think of the commitments your country made in April:

  • Firstly, we'd like to hear your reflections on these commitments and we've developed a table of the commitments each country made to make this a little less time-consuming! Please contact Olivier at olivier@endwaterpoverty.org and he will send you a copy of the commitments table for your country.
  • We've developed a template that our members can use to put together a briefing to give your thoughts on the commitments made and to present your 'calls to action'  to make sure your government keeps to its promises. Please contact Olivier if you would like to work with him on developing your briefing.
  • We will be holding High Level Meeting debriefing meetings in June/July 2012 and it would be great to see you there! Please watch this space to find out where these meetings will be taking place.
  • Following on from these debriefing meetings, it's important for End Water Poverty members to monitor and review government commitments to make sure that these are not just empty promises.

Take a look at this colourful chart (PPTX File PPTX File 74KB) we have put together to show End Water Poverty's plans for following up on the High Level Meeting commitments.

We look forward to hearing what you think about the commitments your government made!
